THE MAESTRO'S QUIZ, 10 MARCH 1997 Trusty Rusty, the Maestro Faithful Companion and former Winter Driver is now resting comfortably with no complications, following Engine Removal Surgery. Trusty generously donated his Essence and his Prime Mover to the Maestro's New Driver, a near-Virgin '65 SC Coupe in Off-White. It was truly a match made in Porsche god Heaven. Moreover, the Porsche gods also decreed (and once again proved their Existence) that Trusty's 1963 356B Ignition key shall, against all odds, in defiance of All Probabilities, FIT the Ignition switch of the White SC. (How's THAT for Multi-Platform Compatibility, huh Bill?) But the Maestro felt sorry for Trusty Rusty. He looked so forlorn sitting there with his Carrera Transmission's Input Shaft sticking out but no engine to put it into. (And practically Brake-less too, which was why Trusty was being used for Donor Material.) As the Maestro was staring at Trusty's Front hood, SUDDENLY he realized that even in Trusty's sad state, Trusty still provides us with Valuable Lessons on Life. Take the following Thought Problem, please Picture an Infinite Matrix of a Polymer (Like the Bondo on Trusty's Front Hood). Picture this Polymer (Bondo) securely bonded to a metallic substrate (Trusty's Front Hood). Now, assume that the Polymer (Bondo) slowwwwwly keeps polymerizing with time and, therefore SHRINKS, uniformly. (Like Bondo does.) Eventually, given enough Time, (like 12 Years), the Polymer Matrix (the Bondo) will shrink enough that CRACKS will appear in the Polymer Matrix (the Bondo) on Trusty's Front hood. What shape will these "Cracks" be? And Why? A simple drawing or description will suffice. (Note to the Richards Out There: Ifin you be supplyin' Simultaneous Differential Equations then you'd best be supplyin' their Solution too. Including Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors. And we'll still need to see a drawing or word description of the shape of the resulting cracks.) Trusty Rusty's front hood doesn't just have cracks in the Bondo, er I mean in the Polymer Matrix. He has major FAULTS. He's a Microcosm of Continental Drift. The Maestro bets that besides this Lesson in Life, Trusty's Front Hood has several other Ph.D. Theses in Physics, Metallurgy, Material Properties, Corrosion, and yes, Polymer Aging just waiting to happen. KEEP THE 356 FAITH! The Maestro
